Here is some backstory on how we got to this post:

I’ve been pretty intrigued by the concept of a “capsule wardrobe” for a little bit now, and have been toying with the idea of giving it a whirl.

I’d really like to simplify our lives – we have so much STUFF. Stuff that gets barely used and that we really don’t need. This (especially) includes clothes.

Before I had Gracie, I loved loved loved to shop for myself. When we first moved into our house, one of our bedrooms was my “dressing room”. Two years and a post-pregnancy body later, let’s just say that not only have my priorities shifted, but almost nothing fits me.

I had so many items that I wore once, or I bought and then just didn’t ever wear. And now I’m starting to realize what a waste it all was. I don’t NEED closets, and dressers, and bins full of clothes and shoes.

What I need, is a seasonally appropriate wardrobe that a) fits me, b) works for my lifestyle as a new mom and c) still represents my style and who I am.

So, enter the capsule wardrobe idea.

How it works: You create a wardrobe per season – we are coming up on summer, so a wardrobe for June-July-August. The idea is to have a closet with a certain number of pieces in it – “they” recommend 39, but it can really be whatever number works for you. This includes shoes and outwear, but does not include pjs, workout clothes or swimwear. Accessories like scarves, belts and jewelry are also not included.

It seemed daunting, so my first step is to figure out my style and my needs for the summer. What events do I have coming up? Am I taking any trips? What kind of weather do I have to be prepared to dress for?

I have one bridal shower, and one bachelorette party weekend at the beach. I work five days a week, and dress business casual. Aside from day trips, we have nothing else planned that requires a special wardrobe. Summer here in New England can vary, so having items that I can add a layer to for cool evenings is important.

Now comes the fun part! You know that Style board you have on Pinterest? (c’mon, we all have one!!) Well, that’s where you start!

I love Pinterest for outfit inspiration, so I’ve put together some of my favorites. I chose most of these because these are items I already have. My goal is to purchase very little and instead, find inspiration on mixing and matching items. This will also cut down on the “I have nothing to wear!” thoughts that I have almost daily.

Outfit 2 Outfit 3 Outfit 4 Outfit 5 Outfit 6 Outfit 8 Outfit 9 Outfit1 The next step involves going through my closet, and trying everything on and building my new wardrobe. Stay tuned for part two – a look at my capsule wardrobe!

Have you tried (or even heard of!) a capsule wardrobe? What are your thoughts?
